optimizing the organ donation system
duration – 3 months // year – ’17 // type – college project
course description and brief
The course was titled ‘Design for Social Needs’ and it was a 2-person project. The course brief was to ‘Identify a social issue, study it in detail and design a product that solves the issue/part of the issue.’
identifying the issue
My friend and I had recently conducted an eye donation campaign in college. During the course of the campaign we learnt how dire the situation of organ donation was in India. Here are some statistics for India in 2017 that support our concern for the issue of organ donation –
4 lakh
people die every year waiting for a transplant
0.8
organ donation rate (person per million)
905
total number of organ donors in 2017
Source – Fortis Organ Retrieval and Transplant
primary research
We visited three hospitals and spoke to the staff about the organ donation process. We also had a detailed conversation with the Central Co-ordinator for the ‘Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Committee (ZTCC)’ for Pune region. She is the link between the hospitals and ‘National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). Her job entails multiple responsibilities –

tracking the transportation of the organ

co-ordination between everyone in the process

managing donations from multiple patients

documentation of completed donations
organ donation system
solution - the organizer app
An app designed to optimize the organ donation process and help the links involved, i.e., medical social workers, and the ZTCC & NOTTO co-ordinators.
app features
personal
floating action speed dial
department-wise contacts
personal notes
daily scheduling and alerts
organ and patient toggle
project takeaways
This was my first app design project, and our initial designs were not very user-friendly. On the suggestion of a friend, we looked up Google’s Material Design Guidelines which helped us tremendously in shaping the final output. This project helped me understand the positive impact interfaces can have on the society.
i hope you liked that project. check out some more of my work :)
